Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Morning · Zealandia

Make Zealandia the main morning activity and allow two to three hours. Choose a guided visit if understanding the birds and restoration work matters to you, or a self-paced route suited to your walking comfort. Move quietly and spend time watching rather than expecting every species to appear on demand.

  2. Lunch · Return towards the city

Eat at an available sanctuary café or return to the city for lunch. Confirm your transport first so a missed shuttle does not dictate the afternoon. A proper meal break fits better than rushing straight from a forest trail to another museum.

  3. Afternoon · Waterfront and Te Papa option

Walk a manageable stretch of the Wellington waterfront. If you want an indoor cultural stop, give Te Papa a focused two-hour visit and choose a few galleries. It is not realistic to see the whole museum thoroughly after a long morning outdoors.

  4. Evening · Cuba Street area

Finish around Cuba Street for dinner and an easy evening stroll. Choose a restaurant by cuisine and current menu, and leave the rest of the night open. If you booked Zealandia at night instead, shorten the daytime programme and build dinner around its check-in time.

Where to pause for food

Breakfast before the sanctuary and a city lunch keep the day simple. Cuba Street makes a useful dinner area with a different atmosphere from the waterfront. Carry a snack and water for Zealandia rather than expecting a food stop deep in the sanctuary.

Getting around

Check Zealandia’s current shuttle and public-transport arrangements directly. The central waterfront and dinner areas can be explored on foot, but the sanctuary is a separate journey. Allow a full day and a buffer for Wellington wind or rain.

For a shorter day or different weather

Choose the day or night sanctuary experience according to your interests; they are not interchangeable wildlife guarantees. In heavy rain, make Te Papa the main activity and keep Zealandia for a better window. With half a day, choose the sanctuary and lunch only.

Before you go

Reserve guided or night tours and read the sanctuary’s entry and biosecurity instructions. Check museum exhibition access if there is something specific you want to see. Stay on paths and do not use food or calls to attract wildlife.
