Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. 09:00 · Opera House forecourt

Begin at Circular Quay and walk to the public Opera House forecourt. Spend about half an hour taking in the building from different angles, then enter the Royal Botanic Garden from the harbour side. This route is about walking and views; an interior performance or tour needs extra time.

  2. 10:00 · Follow Farm Cove

Take the path beside Farm Cove towards Mrs Macquarie’s Point. Allow an hour with pauses for trees, harbour traffic and photographs. Keep to the shoreline first so the route is easy to follow, then use an inland garden path for shade on the way back.

  3. 11:00 · Mrs Macquarie’s Chair

Spend 20–30 minutes around the point and chair, looking back towards the Opera House and bridge. The classic harbour composition is only one angle: the open water and garden edges also make good photographs. Stay on the designated paths and give other visitors a turn at the popular viewpoints.

  4. Lunch and afternoon · Art Gallery of NSW

Continue towards the Art Gallery of NSW and choose a café lunch before a 90-minute to two-hour gallery visit. Pick a collection or exhibition that interests you instead of trying to see every room. Finish towards the city or extend the outing to Woolloomooloo for dinner.

Where to pause for food

Bring a refillable bottle and a small snack. A café or gallery meal avoids carrying a full picnic, while a garden picnic works if you are happy to carry everything out again. Woolloomooloo is a deliberate meal extension, not a shortcut back to Circular Quay.

Getting around

Allow four to six hours including the gallery. The full outing involves sustained walking; shorten it at Farm Cove if heat or mobility makes the point too much. Start at Circular Quay and choose your return transport from the city after the gallery.

For a shorter day or different weather

If rain is persistent, make the gallery the main activity and save the foreshore for a clear interval. If you want only photographs, visit the point and return without adding the museum. The softer light near sunset can be attractive, but check garden gate times first.

Before you go

Check garden access and the gallery’s current exhibition arrangements. Reserve a timed exhibition only after deciding how much walking you want beforehand. Avoid scheduling a tight onward booking immediately after the route.
