Paris: the Seine and a neighbourhood day

A suggested itinerary based in Central Paris. Allow 2 days.

Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Day 1 · Morning · One major museum

    Choose the Louvre or Musée d’Orsay according to your interests and reserve the appropriate entry. Allow three hours or more, selecting a few sections rather than trying to see everything. Keep another timed attraction out of the immediate post-museum window.

  2. Day 1 · Afternoon · The Seine

    Have a seated lunch, then walk a comfortable section of the Seine, crossing a bridge when it suits the route. Pause for coffee and enjoy the riverfront architecture. If you want an island church interior, check its specific entry arrangements and replace part of the walk.

  3. Day 1 · Evening · Eiffel Tower area

    Travel to the Eiffel Tower area for a ground-level view or a pre-booked tower visit. Allow time for security and any queues. A Seine cruise can replace the tower ascent; doing both is optional, not necessary for a satisfying evening.

  4. Day 2 · Morning · Le Marais

    Explore Le Marais at an unhurried pace, using Place des Vosges as a pleasant pause. Allow two to three hours including breakfast or coffee. Browse a few independent shops or choose a museum in the district rather than crossing the city repeatedly.

  5. Day 2 · Afternoon · A neighbourhood meal

    Have a longer lunch, then continue with the district you enjoyed or choose a single additional area such as Saint-Germain. Finish with dinner near your accommodation. Montmartre is a worthwhile alternative half day, but should replace this section rather than become a final rushed detour.

Where to pause for food

Use a bakery breakfast, a seated museum-day lunch and one bistro dinner to give the days a comfortable rhythm. Check menus, serving times and reservations. Buying a picnic can be enjoyable where eating is permitted, but retain an indoor alternative for rain.

Getting around

Use Métro for longer transfers and walk within each district. Allow time for station approaches and stairs. The Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Marais are not adjacent, so group visits by area and keep airport travel outside the sightseeing timetable.

For a shorter day or different weather

In rain, spend longer in one museum and choose a covered or indoor stop. With one day, keep a major collection and the Seine. If heights or queues do not appeal, enjoy the tower from ground level and use the saved time for a meal.

Before you go

Check museum closing days, official tower tickets and any church reservations. Choose one major paid highlight per half day. This route is a suggested introduction, leaving room to enjoy Paris rather than claiming its main attractions can all be completed in two days.
