Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. 09:00 · Laneway breakfast

Start around Degraves Street and Centre Place for coffee and breakfast. Give yourself an hour to explore the short lanes, shopfronts and changing street details. Treat murals as temporary work rather than expecting an exact image from an old post.

  2. 10:30 · A market or city walk

If Queen Victoria Market is operating on your date, travel there for 60–90 minutes of browsing and a light lunch. Otherwise stay with the central arcades and independent shops. Check market days first: it is not an everyday substitute for breakfast.

  3. Afternoon · Art south of the river

Head towards Federation Square and cross the river for an art-focused afternoon. Choose a current NGV collection or exhibition and allow around two hours. Keep the museum visit selective so you still have energy for the evening.

  4. Late afternoon · Southbank and the skyline

Walk a manageable stretch of Southbank, then choose Melbourne Skydeck if clear conditions and its current ticket offer appeal to you. An observation deck is optional; the river walk already gives the day a satisfying finish.

  5. Evening · Dinner in the city

Return towards the centre for dinner around Chinatown or Flinders Lane. Choose one restaurant and leave room for a short evening walk, rather than travelling to several suburbs in search of every famous food stop.

Where to pause for food

A laneway breakfast, market lunch when open and city dinner make a varied day. If the market is closed, use a central café or casual restaurant instead. Reserve dinner only if a particular venue is important; the itinerary is not dependent on a single restaurant.

Getting around

Walk the central sections and use trams for longer links. Check the Free Tram Zone boundary rather than assuming all city-adjacent travel is free. The market detour and NGV visit are in different parts of the centre, so allow transfer time.

For a shorter day or different weather

In rain, spend longer in the arcades and gallery. With half a day, choose laneways, Federation Square and one museum. Save St Kilda, Fitzroy or a Great Ocean Road excursion for separate outings instead of adding them to this city day.

Before you go

Check market opening days, gallery exhibitions and Skydeck visibility before buying tickets. Pack a layer for weather changes. Do not assume a seasonal night market operates simply because the daytime market exists.
