Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Day 1 · Early morning · Fushimi Inari

Begin with the shrine and torii paths, allowing two hours for a partial ascent and pauses. The full mountain route takes longer, so choose a deliberate turnaround point. Visit respectfully rather than treating the gates solely as a photographic backdrop.

  2. Day 1 · Afternoon · Higashiyama

Travel to the Kiyomizu area for lunch, then explore Kiyomizu-dera and the surrounding streets. Allow three hours including the approach. Continue towards Gion and the Kamo River for an early evening walk, keeping to public routes and respecting photography notices.

  3. Day 2 · Morning · A quieter cultural visit

Choose one garden, temple or museum whose current opening arrangements suit your interests. Give it two hours and a café break. Keeping this morning lighter creates room to notice architecture and daily life rather than collecting another list of entrances.

  4. Day 2 · Afternoon · Central Kyoto

Have lunch around central Kyoto, browse Nishiki Market and eat purchases where vendors permit. Continue to the river or explore tea, ceramic and stationery shops. Finish near your accommodation instead of attaching a hurried Arashiyama excursion across the city.

Where to pause for food

Plan seated lunches in Higashiyama and central Kyoto. Matcha sweets and tofu dishes can be enjoyable additions, but several queues are not a substitute for a meal. Reserve a small dinner venue if it matters to you; market businesses keep individual hours.

Getting around

Use rail for Fushimi Inari where convenient, then combine walking with buses or taxis. Check stopping patterns on the JR Nara Line: the local service serves Inari. Allow extra time for busy buses and uphill temple approaches.

For a shorter day or different weather

Shorten the Fushimi Inari climb for fewer steps. In heavy rain, make a museum the main visit. If Arashiyama is a priority, replace day two with a dedicated western-Kyoto day instead of adding it to an already full central route.

Before you go

Check venue hours, closing days and neighbourhood visitor guidance. Early starts help at outdoor approaches but do not mean every interior is open. Avoid following or photographing working residents at close range in Gion.
