Your suggested route
The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.
Day 1 morning · Village and current advice
Arrive in Franz Josef/Waiau and check with the visitor centre about roads, tracks and the glacier viewpoint. Glacier retreat and weather change what can be seen from public walks, so use current information rather than expecting the ice position in an old photograph.
Day 1 afternoon · Valley viewpoint walk
Choose the currently open public valley walk and allow a relaxed two-hour outing including travel and viewing stops. Stay behind barriers and do not follow the riverbed towards the ice. A public walking viewpoint is not access onto the glacier.
Day 2 morning · One booked experience
If a guided glacier flight or heli-hike is your priority, book with a suitable operator and leave the full stated window free. Alternatively, choose a guided Lake Mapourika kayak outing when conditions suit. These are different experiences; select by interest rather than trying to do both before lunch.
Day 2 afternoon · A flexible local finish
Have lunch and use the remaining time for a short open forest walk or a quiet village afternoon. Keep the second day flexible in case weather shifts a booked activity. If travelling to Fox Glacier or Lake Matheson, treat that as an additional road leg with its own time allowance.
