Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Early morning · Cape Byron walk

    Begin before the hottest part of the day and follow the signed Walgun Cape Byron walking route. The full loop is about 3.7 kilometres; allow two to three hours with rests and photographs. The mix of rainforest, headlands and ocean views is more rewarding than driving only to the lighthouse.

  2. Late morning · Lighthouse and viewpoints

    Pause at the lighthouse precinct and designated viewpoints. Watch the water for wildlife without making sightings the condition for a good visit. If you want a guided lighthouse experience, check its current arrangements separately from the outdoor walk.

  3. Lunch · Byron town

    Return to town for a long lunch and a break from the sun. Explore the streets around the centre for cafés and small shops rather than immediately setting off on another drive. Give yourself at least an hour to eat and reset.

  4. Afternoon · Beach or a quieter finish

    Choose a patrolled beach visit if conditions suit, or an easy foreshore walk. End with an early dinner in town. If the morning walk was enough exercise, this is a good afternoon to sit with a book rather than add another headland.

Where to pause for food

Choose breakfast before the walk or carry a snack, then make lunch in town the main meal. A takeaway picnic can be pleasant, but protect food from wildlife and remove everything afterwards. Book dinner if you have a particular restaurant in mind during a busy period.

Getting around

Stay centrally if you want to walk most of the day. Driving to the cape involves parking and access considerations; a central start reduces the need to move the car repeatedly. Allow six to eight hours locally, excluding a drive from the Gold Coast or hinterland.

For a shorter day or different weather

For a gentler visit, choose a shorter signed section and a lookout rather than the full loop. In poor weather, replace the exposed walk with town cafés and shops. Sunrise is optional; it should not mean walking unfamiliar steps without appropriate light.

Before you go

Check Cape Byron park alerts and any lighthouse tour arrangements. Coastal sections involve stairs and exposure. Swim only where local conditions and patrol guidance support it, and keep wildlife viewing at a respectful distance.
