Your suggested route

The times below are suggested allowances, not live opening hours or transport schedules. Adjust the order for your arrival time, bookings and conditions.

  1. Morning · Tablelands breakfast

Start from Atherton or Yungaburra and eat before driving to the Millaa Millaa area. This route concentrates on the waterfall circuit rather than trying to cover every Tablelands attraction. Add extra travel time if starting down on the coast in Cairns.

  2. Late morning · Millaa Millaa Falls

Give Millaa Millaa Falls 45–60 minutes to enjoy the setting and take photographs from public areas. The classic waterfall composition is not the only view: look for the forest and water together. Do not enter the water simply because others are doing so; follow current local advice.

  3. Midday · Zillie and Ellinjaa

Continue around the circuit to Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls, allowing roughly 45 minutes at each plus driving. The access experience differs between stops, with steps and slippery surfaces possible. It is fine to enjoy a lookout without descending every trail.

  4. Afternoon · Lunch and a slower return

Eat in the Millaa Millaa area or use a picnic you packed. Return towards your Tablelands base with time for one village stop. Save distant crater lakes and another major walk for a second day rather than arriving at the final waterfall exhausted.

Where to pause for food

Carry a picnic as a fallback because smaller towns have fewer late-lunch options. Breakfast at your base and a snack between falls make the day less dependent on finding an open kitchen. Keep food secure and take all litter back to town.

Getting around

A car or organised tour is the practical way to connect the waterfalls. Use the current road map and allow a full local day. The circuit itself is compact, but the journey from Cairns and winding approach roads add substantial time.

For a shorter day or different weather

If heavy rain makes tracks unsuitable, choose a shorter viewpoint stop and a village lunch only where roads remain safe. For a half day, select Millaa Millaa and one other fall. Do not follow social-media shortcuts around closed barriers.

Before you go

Check road and park alerts, especially after tropical rain. Wear shoes suitable for wet steps and pack a dry layer for the return. Waterfall photography does not require climbing onto slippery rocks or standing under the falling water.
